Summer CPE Program

The summer unit is similar in content to the extended units, but is concentrated into a full-time ten-week period.

Summer CPE Unit:  June 1 - August 6, 2010

Following orientation during the first week, the group meets nine hours per week for educational seminars. The remainder of the forty-two to forty-five hours per week are spent either in visitation of patients, families, or staff, or in working on educational assignments. The interns encounter a wide range of pastoral situations, including crisis and supportive ministries.

The tuition for an summer unit is $500. Upon acceptance, a non-refundable deposit of $150 is due. The balance of the tuition ($350) is due the first week of the unit, unless other arrangements are made with the supervisor.

The requirements for the summer unit typically include:

  • Learning Contract – three or four learning goals for the unit.
  • Verbatim or Critical Incident Reports (6) - These reports are tools to reflect on pastoral visits. Three or four of these reports will be presented to your peer group. The remainder will be turned in to your supervisor for written comments and/or individual discussion.
  • Case Study – an in-depth examination of your pastoral care of a patient or family member.
  • Reflection Papers (weekly) – written reflections on interactions with patients, family members, staff, and peers to focus on what you are learning.
  • Theological Reflection Story – a look at story from your life through the lens of theological reflection.
  • Reading Reports (2) – you will read two books and reflect on what you learned and how you can apply the learnings to your pastoral care.
  • Chaplain Reports (each shift) – a listing of persons to whom care was given.
  • Individual Supervision (bi-weekly) – individual time to process your learning.
  • End-of-Unit Evaluation – written reflection on what you have learned throughout the unit.
