Session I Workshops (participants choose one):
 
Workshop A: Substance Abuse & the Adolescent Brain

Adolescence is the period of time during which many people begin to use alcohol and other drugs, and often do so heavily.  This presentation will focus on recent findings regarding adolescent substance use, adolescent brain development, and the impact of alcohol on adolescent behavior and brain function.  The information shared in this workshop is invaluable for anyone encountering youth, whether professionally or personally.
 
Workshop B: Case Law Update
George C. Geisler, Jr., DRE – PA DUI Assn. Law Enforcement Division
 
This workshop will cover the issue of the legal implications of DUI enforcement; including the handling of arrest, charging, processing, and trial of DUI suspects. Current and in-depth review of the application of the recently implemented DUI law, and recent case law.  In dealing with DUI offenders, it is imperative that all involved understand recent local changes, as well as the proper procedures required for prosecution, license suspension and court-ordered directions.
 
Workshop C: Tactical Communications

This workshop will provide participants with an overview of appropriate verbal skills, non-verbal behaviors and effective intervention alternatives required to prevent and diffuse conflict situations.  Several techniques are presented which are designed to lessen the professional’s threat from angry, upset, uncooperative or overly hostile citizens.

Lancaster General Hospital’s Trauma Service is committed to providing opportunities to aid in the reduction of traumatic injury, especially those injuries from the influence of drug and alcohol use.  This workshop will provide an overview of current focus as proven through evidence-based research, national and state trauma guidelines for alcohol and the SBIRT assessment tools and techniques that especially focus on translating theory into practical application.
 
Workshop E:  Compliance Checks/Fake IDs
Todd Merlina, Enforcement Supervisor, and Corporal Rick Goodling, Pennsylvania State Police, Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement 
 
PA State Police have been granted authority to work with underage buyers to purchase alcoholic beverages in a controlled environment. Through the program, much has been discovered including the creative production and use of fake IDs.  This session will provide an update on both the compliance check program and the latest information on fake IDs.
 
Workshop F:  Driver Licensing Issues
Scott Shenk, Bureau of Driver Licensing, PennDOT
 
This workshop will focus on court and legislative matters affecting driver’s license suspension for DUI offenders, as well as matters regarding ignition interlock. Participants will have an opportunity to address the presenter on any suspension/revocation matters. This workshop is a must for anyone dealing with DUI offenders, especially in a supervising capacity.

Drugs 101:  What Parents Need to Know

Do you know what “cheese” is?  What does “420” mean? Ever wonder what the “angry snowman” t-shirts are all about?  Get answers to these questions and more during this eye-opening session. A mock bedroom of a teenager serves as the backdrop. Throughout the presentation, more than 70 indicators of drug use will be unveiled to show a variety of ingenious hiding places adolescents use right in their own homes. Signs, symptoms and current trends of drug use will be presented.  Even the most experienced professional will learn from this presentation.
