Lung Cancer Awareness

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 90 percent of lung cancer deaths in men and almost 80 percent in women are due to smoking. People who smoke are 10 to 20 times more likely to get lung cancer. “Secondhand” smoke also causes the disease.

Lancaster General is a leader in offering tobacco use prevention and cessation programs. Our County’s rate of mortality and morbidity is slightly lower than the State and surrounding counties.

Each year Lancaster General provides:

  • LifeSkills tobacco use prevention program to more than 6,000 students
  • Smoking cessation programs to over 150 adults
  • Smoking cessation program to over 3,200 inpatients each year

Lancaster General’s Cancer Care Program is committed to preventing lung cancer and reducing the burden of those affected by lung cancer. As a member of the University of Pennsylvania’s Cancer Network, we provide leading-edge treatments, support services and have access to some of the latest in clinical trials.

Randall A. Oyer, MD, Lancaster General Oncology Program Medical Director, credits the multidisciplinary team of physicians and clinicians for sharing their insights and experience and working together to develop courses of treatment.
