Norlanco Family Medicine, The Story
In the late 1960's and early 1970's there was a shortage of physician in the northwest Lancaster County area. A group of citizens interested in having adequate health care available to the resident of this community formed the Northwest Lancaster County Medical Association (Norlanco), a non-profit organization. This association agreed to build a 14,000 square foot building, which was partially financed by a community fund drive. The balance of the financing was obtained through a bank mortgage. The founding physicians of Norlanco Medical Associates were J. Kenneth Brubaker, M.D.; Stanley M. Godshall, M.D.; and the late R. Clair Weaver, M.D. who agreed to rent the facility, provide medical services and manage the health care center. Construction of the center was completed and opened to the public in September of 1973.
The three founding physicians came to this community with a desire to help meet the medical needs and with a vision to develop a more innovative and effective primary health care delivery system. This vision included the availability of services, preventive screenings, health maintenance, and crisis care. The three physicians were trained and certified in family practice, a new medical specialty in the early 1970's.
From 1973 to 1983 the number of physicians increased from three to seven, two physician assistants, and a support staff of 39. In 1976 the basement was finished to provide dental and counseling services. During this ten-year period physical therapy, dietary counseling and flexible sigmoidoscopy was added to the list of procedures done at Norlanco.
In 1983 a 6,000 square foot addition was built which included six examination areas, two nursing stations, emergency room, physical therapy, audio room, a small waiting room, and three physician offices.
On July 30, 1990, the partners of Norlanco Medical Associates exercised the 1973 lease agreement option to purchase the Norlanco Family Health Center. A month later construction began on a 12,000 square foot addition, which was completed in March 1991. This addition provided a new waiting room, X-ray suite, twelve examination rooms, four nursing stations, four physician offices, two conference rooms, and a suite for Philhaven - Elizabethtown.
From 1983 to 1992 five additional physicians were added making a total of twelve physicians, two physicians assistants, and a support staff of 84. During this time period, mammography and diabetic counseling were added to the services provided.
In February 1998, Norlanco Family Medicine joined the Lancaster General Medical Group, making it the largest family practice under the Lancaster Health Alliance's umbrella of members. Currently, there are 16 physicians, one physician assistant, one nurse practitioner and 108 support staff.
