Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid that causes swelling—usually in the arm or leg. This condition is particularly common when lymph nodes are removed because of cancer surgery or damage to lymph vessels from radiation treatment. When lymphatic system functioning is disrupted, it affects the body’s ability to drain lymphatic fluid. Those who’ve had a mastectomy or lumpectomy are at risk, even years after surgery. If untreated, lymphedema can cause severe swelling and physical complications.
With the help of Lancaster General Health’s Lymphedema Management program, patients learn techniques that help control lymphedema:
- manual lymph drainage or lymph drainage techniques
- exercise
- skin care
- use of compression bandages.
