LGH Expands Rehab Capabilities for Hip, Knee and Shoulder Replacement Patients

The rehabilitation gym at Lancaster General Hospital’s Orthopedic Center recently enhanced its space and treatment capabilities, adding new, state-of-the-art equipment for patients recovering from knee, hip and shoulder replacement surgeries.
Along with a more spacious environment, the gym, located close to patient rooms on the hospital’s Total Joint Unit, now includes a simulated car/SUV and an adjustable stair trainer.
“Before a patient is admitted for surgery, we offer a home visit from a member of our nursing team,” explained Gary Greenslade, MPT, lead therapist. “Along with presenting information about what to expect during joint replacement surgery, the nurse conducts a home safety assessment and notes important details, like the grade of their stairs. Our physical and occupational therapists and assistants can then tailor therapy to the home environment to which the patient will return.”
In addition to the new simulated vehicle and stair trainer, patients make use of strength-building exercise equipment and weights, as well as a full kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, shower stall and living room.
"Our goal is to help patients restore their abilities and return to the lifestyle they enjoy," said occupational therapist Jennifer Lambert, manager, LGH Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, "Our expanded facility allows us to do our jobs even more effectively."
Lancaster General Hospital performs close to 8,000 orthopedic procedures a year -- one of the highest volumes in the region. The Orthopedic Center will mark its five-year anniversary of service to the community in December.
