Health Sciences Library

The Lancaster General
Health Sciences Library

About the Library

The Health Sciences Library provides systems, resources, and services to enable hospital, medical staff, faculty, students and patient and families to acquire and maintain the knowledge and skills needed for patient care, education, research and management.

The Health Sciences Library is located on the first floor of Lancaster General Hospital, near the James Street entrance. It has approximately 2800 square feet of space. Tables, study units and a lounge area provide seating for 42 people. There are ten networked computer workstations available with free printing.

Although we are a small library, we offer a vast selection of resources both print and electronic. Our online resources are especially deep, offering scholarly journals from a variety of disciplines. The networked computer workstations provide access to online databases including the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health, Medline, Clinical Psychology, Health Administration, and Academic Search Elite. The library also subscribes to MD Consult, which offers full-text of medical books and journals, clinical practice guidelines, patient education handouts, and medication information. The Cochrane Library database includes full-text systematic reviews of the medical literature. EBSCOhost provides access to multiple full-text databases, which include the social sciences, humanities, general sciences, education, and newspaper literature. The Internet, Microsoft Office applications and the library's online catalog are also available. The Library maintains an Intranet website (available at LG-internal locations only) that provides access to all databases, online catalog, Internet resources, request subject guides, workshops and information request forms at all networked locations, including computer labs and classrooms.

The library also maintains a patient education collection. The collection includes a wide array of health related topics written in a consumer friendly format. The print collection is available for circulation to patients and the public. Additional patient education resources are also available electronically via the “Patient and Family Health Resources” link on the library homepage.

Services

The library is here to support you. We welcome and encourage suggestions to enhance our collection. If we do not have a resource you need, please ask the librarian about interlibrary loan services. Requests for specific articles, journals and books can also be made directly by simply completing a “request form” via the library homepage.

In depth research is provided by the librarian including literature searches. A literature search will produce a list of citations and abstracts on a particular topic for physician review. The requested articles are then via the library collection or through interlibrary loan and forwarded to the physician. For your convenience, a “literature search request” form is also located via the library homepage.

Access

The majority of resources are available remotely via the VPN. The process to login via the VPN is as follows:

  • Login to the VPN either with Quick Links, or under Online Services, or through the LG Employees site on the LG website, or via the VPN tab on the library homepage.
  • At the VPN menu, go to the Intranet website.
  • From the Intranet website, click the "College" tab to access the College website.
  • From the College website, click the "Library" tab.
  • Then access whichever database they are looking for.
The library normal operating hours are as follows:

  • Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
  • Friday, 8 a.m.-5p.m.

For access to the library beyond normal hours, physicians may request the library key from the telecommunications operators located on the first floor.
